Wildlife World Day 2026: When Technology Roars for Wildlife
Wildlife World Day is a moment for reflection to celebrate the natural wonders of our planet and to honor
those working to protect them. Today, we spotlight a Tanzanian initiative that is transforming
conservation through community-centered innovation: Kuza STEAM Generation (KsGEN).
Founded by Rebecca Ryakitimbo, KsGEN is dedicated to building informed, skilled, and innovative
communities through STEAM Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics education. The
organization’s mission goes beyond education: it’s about empowering people to use technology for
real-world solutions.
WildNET: Innovation Meets Conservation
One of the most exciting efforts to date is WildNET, an AI-driven conservation project implemented by
KsGEN with funding from the National Geographic Society.
WildNET brings emerging technology into the heart of conservation challenges. In Tanzania, elephants
and humans increasingly intersect near villages and farmland as wildlife moves outside protected areas.
WildNET uses artificial intelligence with image recognition to detect elephants from camera images,
empowering communities with timely information to act before conflict escalates.
This system includes:
● Solar-powered cameras and computing devices placed near traditional elephant pathways.
● AI image recognition models that analyze field images to identify elephants.
● Real-time SMS alerts, sent to trained community champions when elephants are detected,
enabling preventative action in collaboration with wildlife authorities.
This approach signifies more than new technology; it reflects a partnership between local communities
and conservation institutions, where information flows directly to the people most affected by
human-wildlife interactions.
